How quickly have flown these last seven years, my dear Friend, since we bade each other Farewell at the University. Soon after our parting I was able to greet you as an English clergyman, and not long afterwards you had the opportunity to greet me as a Serbian clergyman.

Our holy and God-bearing Father, Bishop Nikolai of blessed memory, was born at dawn on December 23, 1880, on the feast of St. Naum of Ochrid, to pious Serbian Orthodox parents, Dragomir and Katarina Velirnirovich, in the small village of Lelich.
